New Delhi: Communal violence was at its peak in 2008 if fiveyear data is compiled. This is largely because of increased in communalviolence in Orissa and Karnataka. The data for the communal violence incidentsin all states in the last five years was presented by Ajay Maken, Minister ofState in the Ministry of Home Affairs, in written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.
Maharashtra tops the chart with 681 communal incidents in the lastfive years. Madhya Pradesh comes close second with 654 incidents and UttarPradesh is at third position with 613 incidents. Karnataka (341), Gujarat (326), Orissa (243),Rajasthan (217), Bihar (169), Tamil Nadu(124), Kerala (103), and Jharkhand (102) are other states of concern.

The Minister said thatto maintain communal harmony in the country, the Central Government assiststhe State Governments/ Union Territory Administrations in a variety of wayslike sharing of intelligence, sending alert messages, sending Centralpara-military Forces to the concerned State Governments on specific requestincluding the composite Rapid Action Force created specially to deal withcommunal situations, and in the modernization of the State Police Forces. In addition, the Union Governmentsends advisories in this regard from time to time. The Central Governmenthas also circulated revised Guidelines to promote communal harmony, to theStates and Union Territories in the month of June, 2008.
Further, the Central Government hasintroduced a Bill titled ‘The Communal Violence (Prevention, Control andRehabilitation of Victims) Bill, 2005’ in the Rajya Sabha to address variousaspects of the issue of communal violence.
