The policemen were travelling in eastern Nangarhar province when they were hit by a remote-controlled bomb, the interior ministry said.

“Three policemen were martyred and two others were injured,” a statement said. It blamed the attack on enemies of “peace and stability”, a term used by Afghans to refer to Taliban insurgents and other militants.

The explosion destroyed a police vehicle and several weapons, it added.

Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, a spokesman for the provincial government, blamed the attack on the Taliban.

Taliban militants trying to topple the US-backed Kabul government often use roadside bombs and suicide blasts in their attacks on security forces.

Most of the unrest is in southern and eastern parts of Afghanistan, which lie close to the Pakistani border where Afghan government and Western officials say the Taliban runs training camps.(*)
