Chennai : Protests continued Thursday against civilian deaths in Sri Lanka, which have been dominating politics in Tamil Nadu for the past month.
Students and lawyers staged demonstrations in various pockets of the state while over 10,000 fishermen in Rameshwaram, 600 km south of here, announced an indefinite strike agitating against alleged killings of Tamils by Sri Lankan forces.
Over 250 lawyers courted arrest after attempting to picket army installations in various parts of the state.
Most educational institutions closed a fortnight ago after violent protests reopened Thursday granting relief to students due to the nearing dates of annual examinations.
State Congress unit president K.V. Thangkabalu led protests here against alleged insulting remarks against party chief Sonia Gandhi and former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi by certain sections of lawyers and political fringe elements.
“While the solution to the ethnic question in Sri Lanka can only be provided by the central and state political leadership, it must also be understood that fissiparous tendencies and insults to national icons cannot be tolerated,” Thangkabalu told reporters.
