Chandigarh : The ad-hoc Shiromani Gurudwara Parbhandhak Committee in Haryana Wednesday said it was satisfied over a report submitted by the state agriculture minister recommending a separate SGPC in the state.
“The report has recommended that the SGPC Haryana should have 31 members (25 elected and six nominated) but we want that 27 should be elected and only four should be nominated. This nomination should also be done by the general house in their first meeting and not by the government or any government controlled agency,” said Didar Singh Nalvi, general secretary ad-hoc SGPC.
Nalvi said Delhi has its own SGPC, and along similar lines they want a separate SGPC in Haryana so that it could work for the benefit of the nearly two million Sikhs living in the state.
“We also want that a three-member judicial court on the lines of fast track courts should be established for SGPC Haryana. Punjab and Haryana High Court should appoint its members and keep a watch on their accountability.”
Three years ago, a committee was set up by the Haryana government under the chairmanship of Agriculture Minister H.S. Chatha to evaluate the issue of creating a separate SGPC to manage gurudwaras in the state.
Chatha submitted his report to Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda Feb 20.
At present SGPC’s ad-hoc committee has 11 elected members and the report has suggested that till the final bill is passed, the number of members should be increased to 21 by including 10 more government-nominated members.
Opposing this recommendation, Nalvi said: “This is unconstitutional and the presence of government representatives will influence the decisions of elected members. We want a 13-member committee by accommodating only two government nominated members till the final bill is passed.”
