Ban is arriving in Beirut this weekend, and will give a speech on the current situation in the area and inspect troops of the UN Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

The UNIFIL has over 13,000 troops south of the country, who are in charge of implementing UN resolution 1701 which ceased war operations between Israel and Hezbollah in 2006.

However, UNIFIL’s task in the area has been shaken by several incidents. The Italian unit under UNIFIL arrested Sunday two Lebanese cleaning workers while smuggling plastic explosive material into the headquarters in south Lebanon town Tibnin.

Last Thursday, Katyusha rockets were fired from areas under UNIFIL control into northern Israel, prompting an Israeli respond by firing shells on South Lebanon.
