Ranchi : Hundreds of workers of Jharkhand’s main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Friday staged a demonstration outside the governor’s residence here, demanding president’s rule in the state.
“Shibu Soren lost the Tamar assembly by-elections on Jan 8 and resigned as chief minister on Jan 12. The UPA (United Progressive Alliance) has failed to turn up to form alternative government. We now demand president’s rule and fresh elections,” state BJP president Pashupati Nath Singh told reporters.
“Why is Governor Syed Sibte Razi silent on the present political crisis? Why is he not taking any steps? It is the constitutional obligation of the governor to act as no party or alliance has staked claim to forming the government,” said former chief minister and BJP leader Arjun Munda.
The BJP workers demonstrating outside the governor’s house held up banners with slogans like “There should be fresh elections”, “Shame on UPA”, “Two years’ rule of UPA promoted corruption and crime”.
The UPA has failed to unanimously decide on whom to appoint as the next chief minister. After Soren resigned, he was appointed caretaker chief minister. However, he was hospitalised after he complained of chest pain Tuesday.
