Beirut : UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon met Saturday in Beirut with President of Lebanon Michel Sleiman, and other local political leaders, to whom he expressed his deep concern over the Israeli invasion of Gaza.
Lebanese TV broadcasted images on Friday night of the encounters of Ban after his arrival in Beirut, coming from Turkey, his most recent visit as part of a regional tour including Egypt, Jordan, Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory of the West Bank.
Ban and Sleiman held talks on the crisis in Gaza and the political situation in Lebanon, official sources indicated, adding he met with Prime Minister Fouad Siniora and with the Head of Parliament Nabih Berri, before attending a special session at the chamber headquarters.
The UN Secretary General expressed his deep concern about the continuity of violence unleashed by Israel in the Palestinian region, controlled by Hamas.
The Israeli invasion has left more than 1,200 people dead and around 5,000 Palestinians wounded, against 13 fatal Israeli victims, 10 of them soldiers and 78 wounded, the last of them reported this Saturday.
Local diplomatic groups pointed out Ban will visit members of United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, UNIFIL, located south this country.
Ban Ki-moon will travel to Syria on Sunday before visiting Kuwait, where he will attend the Arab economic Summit planned for Monday.
