Jammu : Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Tuesday ordered the Jammu and Kashmir police to look after the security of the summer capital Srinagar which was earlier being managed by central paramilitary forces.
“The chief minister issued instructions to deploy Jammu and Kashmir police in the forefront at all public places in the Srinagar city. These will be, as hitherto, supported by other central forces,” an official spokesman said.
“The deployment of the state police will facilitate better police-public relations,” the spokesman said.
The chief minister said the move would speed up the redressal of public grievances. It supplements the efforts of the law and order machinery in the maintenance of peace and order with the active cooperation of the public, Abdullah said.
Director General of Police Kuldeep Khoda said the deployment of the police in Srinagar has already started.
The security in the troubled Jammu and Kashmir is being jointly managed by the Indian Army, central paramilitary troopers and the police since 1990 when armed uprising erupted in the state.
Many political parties in the state have been demanding the vacation of the army and paramilitary troopers from residential areas, leaving the entire security job with the state police.
