Maoist shutdown in Bihar: 11 trucks torched

Patna : Protesting the arrest and alleged torture of their top leaders, Maoist rebels Thursday enforced a 24-hour strike, setting ablaze 11 trucks and blasting a mobile telephone signal tower in Bihar, police said.

Additional Director General of Police (Headquarters) Neelmani said armed Maoists forcibly stopped the 11 trucks and set them ablaze in Rohtas, about 150 km from here.

According to district officials, five of the trucks were carrying cement bags from the Kalyanpur cement factory. The drivers and cleaners were dragged out before the vehicles were torched, they said.

A group of Maoist rebels blasted a mobile phone tower in Dumaria in Gaya.

Neelmani said the banned Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) called for the shutdown in Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Orissa.
