Lucknow : Five policemen were suspended Friday after a murder accused attempted suicide by setting himself on fire in a lock-up in Uttar Pradesh’s Jyotiba Phule Nagar district, an official said.
The five policemen – a sub-inspector, a head-constable and three constables – were suspended for negligence, district police chief Prashant Kumar told IANS on phone.
Kallua, 29, who set himself ablaze after pouring kerosene Wednesday, is battling for his life in a hospital in Jyotiba Phule Nagar, about 300 km from here.
“His condition is critical as he has received serious burn injuries all over the body,” said Deputy Superintendent of Police Shakuntala Devi.
On the directions of the district police chief, an inquiry has been initiated into the case.
“We want to know how a match-box and kerosene reached Kallua. Undoubtedly, after such an incident, the role of the policemen comes under the scanner,” said Kumar.
“On completion of the inquiry, we may also recommend that the state government terminate the services of the policemen found guilty,” he added.
