New Delhi: Three Cabinet ministers yesterday sat down to analyze the Delhi High Court ruling decriminalizing homosexual relationship between two consenting adults, and prepare the government’s response to the order.

Soon after the High Court order on Thursday reading down Section 377 that criminalizes gay sex, Law Minister M Veerappa Moily had said the government would study the judgment before deciding on the future course of action.

Home Minister P Chidambaram, Law Minister M Veerappa Moily and Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad met for about an hour in North Block on Friday to discuss the issue. It is believed that the ministers have asked the Department of Law to prepare a note on the options available before the government. The note will be given to the Prime Minister. And then it is likely the matter will be discussed in the full Cabinet.

“As we read the judgment, the judgment deals with only one aspect of Section 377. Section 377 is left intact except for one aspect. So we have asked the Department of Law to prepare a note based on the judgment. We will take a look at the note and decide what needs to be done,” Chidambaram has been quoted as saying after the meeting. He, however, has refused to say whether the government would appeal against the Delhi High Court order.
