“A personal security officer (PSO) of superintendent of police (CID) in Assam shot dead a truck driver and his assistant in Guwahati late Thursday night after the loaded truck hit the police official’s car by mistake,” said Tripura Director General of Police Pranay Sahaya.

“Both Tripura and Meghalaya governments have asked the Assam government to inquire into this incident and take stern action against the offending policemen.”

The truck driver, Krishna Chandra Tripura, 35 was from Tripura and his assistant, Shaing Langrin, 25 from Meghalaya.

In Guwahati, Senior Superintendent of Police (City) Pradip Chandra Saloi said the PSO Gadadhar Roy was arrested and a case registered against him after he surrendered to police, who also seized his service weapon, an AK-47 rifle, with which he allegedly fired at the victims.

“We are investigating the case and whoever is found guilty would be punished,” Saloi added.

Witnesses told the police that the PSO rained bullets on the victims from his AK-47 rifle till his magazine was empty.

“This is nothing but another case of police brutality and highhandedness. It is shameful that in a democratic country like ours, the law enforcing agencies are killing innocent citizens in a minor incident, instead of taking legal action,” said Bishu Saha, a motor workers’ leader in Tripura.

To protest the incident, motor and transport workers organisations have called a 12-hours ‘Chakka Jam’ (transport strike) Monday in Assam.
