The modus operandi of the gang was simple. They would claim that they had found gold biscuits while digging but couldn’t sell them because jewellers won’t believe them due to their poor background. They would then sell the fake gold biscuits to unsuspecting customers at a comparatively lower price.

“People involved in this racket used to make calls from places as far as Haryana, Rajasthan and some parts of western Uttar Pradesh telling their prospective clients that they had gold biscuits which they were prepared to sell at prices much less than the market price,” Superintendent of Police Jaideep Prasad said.

A prospective customer tipped off the police about the deal and the police laid a trap near Ganesh Nagar trisection in Gandhi Nagar area of the city where the fraudsters had called the customer.

“The police caught all the accused as soon as they handed over the biscuit to the prospective customer. Over a dozen fake biscuits have also been seized from them and further investigations are on,” Prasad said.

Those arrested have been identified as Zahir, 40, Khushilal, 32, Riazuddin, 30, Raju, 25, and Guddu, 25.
