Ranchi : A tribal body in Jharkhand has lodged a complaint against Ranchi Archbishop Cardinal Telesphore P. Toppo and others, accusing them of hurting the sentiments of tribals in a translated version of the Bible.
The complaint was lodged in Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Ghanshayam Kumar Mallik’s court in Ranchi Monday. It was made by Ajay Tirkey, president of Jharkhand Sarna Samittee (JSS), a prominent tribal body.
The Bible Society of India had last year published Nemha Bible in the Kurukh tribal language. The translated version of the Bible allegedly used derogatory remarks against tribal society.
“We lodged a complaint after the Bible Society of India failed to withdraw the book from the market. It was a deliberate attempt to hurt the sentiments of tribal people. We have sought action against the writer and people involved in the translated Bible,” Tirkey told reporters Tuesday.
