Dhaka : The Bangladesh government Thursday cancelled the national parade to mark its 39th Independence Day as part of the security measures in the wake of last month’s mutiny by Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) troopers.
The decision, which was taken after a meeting of the cabinet committee on law and order, was announced by Cooperatives Minister Syed Ashraful Islam, Star Online reported.
The border guards revolted Feb 25-26 over low wages and poor working conditions. The carnage left 74 people dead.
Following the revolt at the BDR headquarters here, the government has cancelled the national parade that is organised on the occasion of the Independence Day March 26, the website of The Daily Star said.
The military, paramilitary, law enforcement agencies and students take part in the parade.
Bangladesh declared independence March 26, 1971, a day after Pakistani authorities in the erstwhile eastern province cracked down on civilians and political dissenters. The country’s liberation came in December that year.
