The victim, who was identified as Pawan, was killed at Khera More in Najafgarh area at around 6 a.m., an official said.

Pawan, a resident of Gopal Nagar, was fired at by the car-borne assailants soon after he alighted from a state-run bus and began walking towards a stationary Blueline bus, which plies on route number 578 between Safdarjung and Najafgarh.

“He first took a bullet in his back and tried to flee. But the assailants caught him after a short chase and shot him in the head. Pawan died on the spot while the killers managed to escape,” the police officer said.

The police suspect it was a case of family rivalry.

“Last month Pawan’s brother Anil allegedly murdered a man called Ashok following a dispute over the purchase of a car. Anil was arrested and put behind bars. We suspect that Ashok’s family members killed Pawan to avenge the murder,” the official added.

The police said a case of murder has been registered against five people and efforts were on to trace them.
