The inmates fled the Balgrah (observation home) in Kingsway Camp in Mukherjee Nagar around 1.30 p.m. A team has been formed to track down the missing inmates, a police official said.

“There was a division among the inmates over the arrangement of food. One group demanded that the food should be cooked inside the home only and no homemade food be allowed while the other group was asking that the food, made by the parents of inmates, should be allowed,” the official said.

According to the police, it was decided last year that no outside food would be served to the inmates.

The inmates had a heated argument over the issue Thursday morning and the group demanding homemade food thrashed the others before fleeing the observation home by jumping over the gates, the officer added.

However, till late evening, the police were yet to register a case in the incident.
