Boat capsize: state government announced compensation of Rs 5 lakh

Kochi: Two days after the boat tragedy that took eight lives of students, the state government has announced compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the families of the victims. A hanging bridge also will be built at the place with immediate effect. The decision was taken in the Cabinet meeting held today.

The state Human Rights Commission has voluntarily taken up a case on the boat accident. The case was reportedly taken based on media reports. KE Gangadharan, member of the Commission, had visited the place and the houses of the dead students yesterday. The Commission notice reportedly asks the District Collector and the District Panchayat Secretary to submit report on the incident within a week.

The Kerala School Teachers Association has decided to give Rs 10 lakh to the victims of the boat tragedy. The teachers’ organisation has around 1 lakh members all over the state and the amount will be collected on November 11. The organisation had earlier also given compensation amounts to the victims of the Thatekkad boat tragedy and Irikkoor accident, where students had lost lives.

Eight students were killed and many other injured in the boat capsize that took place in the River Chaliyar in Malappuram district on Wednesday. The boat that the students were travelling capsized reportedly due to over weight as around 25 students were there in the small boat. The accident took place at at around 4.40 pm when the students -all were higher secondary students- were returning home from school. The incident took place at Areacode.
