“Teachers will be judged by students on various scales like style of teaching, communication skills and teacher’s personal involvement in class. Thereafter, teachers will be assigned grades,” a senior university official told IANS on condition of anonymity as he was not authorised to speak to the media.

“This will certainly bring positive results and enhance teaching quality by making teachers more disciplined and answerable,” he said. “We have already moved this proposal and it is expected to get the nod of the authorities.”

Panjab University, one of the oldest universities of India, is spread over an area of 550 acres here in Sectors 14 and 25. More than 10,000 students, nearly 70 percent of them girls, study in over 60 research and teaching departments.

Students at PU are quite enthusiastic about the proposed move.

“If implemented, it will prove a revolutionary decision in the history of PU. It will make our education system more streamlined and transparent,” said Subodh Sharma, a student of management.

Abhishek Luthra, a law student, said, “This is a long pending reform and we support the decision. It will make our education system more balanced and focused.”
