Kolkata: China has asked for a “special policy” for its labourers to help businesses of the two sides finish ongoing projects in India, a top Chinese official said here Monday.
“I have written to the external affairs ministry suggesting a special visa policy would help finish ongoing Chinese projects in India,” said China’s consul general in Kolkata Mao Siwei.
The remark came against the backdrop of India’s unease over the misuse of business visas for short-term employment.
Regulations require unskilled expatriate workers to apply for employment visas. But as they are harder to obtain, many Chinese companies send their workers to work on short-term projects on business visas.
“We urge the government to look into our suggestion as both parties are set to lose. Moreover, billions of dollars are at stake here,” Mao told reporters on the sidelines of a seminar organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce.
According to him, many Chinese labourers are awaiting India’s approval of their employment visas.
“This is a big problem for completing ongoing projects. The situation is worrisome,” Mao said.
Yunnan Province Secretary General Ding Shaoxiang, who was also present at the seminar, said China was interested to invest in several sectors in India.
“We have interest in Indian information technology industry, electrical equipment and fertilisers,” Ding, who is leading a visiting delegation in India, said at the seminar.
“Tourism is another sector where both countries can prosper,” he added.
