India hopes for violence-free Afghan run-off poll

New Delhi: Amid continuing uncertainty in Afghanistan following the decision to hold the Nov 7 run-off election, India Wednesday said it was hopeful that the electoral process would strengthen democracy and conclude in a violence-free atmosphere.

“It is our hope that the election process will strengthen democracy in Afghanistan and will be conducted in a violence-free atmosphere,” external affairs ministry spokesperson Vishnu Prakash told reporters here.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai will face his main rival, former foreign minister Abdullah Abdullah, in a run-off election Nov 7 to resolve a contested first round that plunged Afghanistan into prolonged political uncertainty.
