Michael Bryant, who till May served as the attorney-general in Canada’s most powerful province of Ontario, spent Monday night in police custody after causing the death of 33-year-old cyclist Darcy Allan Sheppard.

The 43-year-old politician, who quit his high-profile job to take up the post of CEO of Toronto Invest to attract investment into the city, was driving in the busy downtown area after celebrating his wedding anniversary with his wife Monday night, when his Saab convertible bumped into the cyclist.

The cyclist, who was reportedly drunk as per his girlfriend’s statement, grabbed on to the side of the car as the former minister drove away.

The biker, who was dragged along, fell under the rear wheels after hitting a roadside mailbox. He later died in hospital.

Bryant spent the night in police station and was released next day.

Under terms for his release revealed Friday, Bryant has been banned from driving till his trial is completed. He has also been banned from leaving Ontario province.

The former top law man in the province has also been ordered to deposit his passport with the police and report any changes in his address or employment status.

Since Bryant appointed judges and government prosecutors in Ontario as its attorney general till May, his case will be tried by a judge out of the province to avoid conflict of interest.

He will appear in court Oct 9.

The case has made national headlines as Bryant was aiming to become the next premier of Ontario after the current incumbent Dalton McGuinty.

It now seems impossible for him to salvage his political career after the accident.
