Ranchi : Four policemen were suspended Wednesday for dereliction of duty after seven undertrials, including three Maoist rebels, escaped from a court lock-up they were supposed to guard in Jharkhand.
All the four, including a woman head constable, were on security duty of the lock-up in Khuti district. The suspended cops include Jitendra Ram, in-charge of the court lock-up and Assistant Sub Inspector Arjun Ojha.
The undertrials managed to escape after breaking the windowpanes of the lock-up.
The three Maoist rebels, who were among the undertrials, are Tejlal alias David, Ashram Gope and Jidan Gudia. They belong to the Maoist organization People’s Liberation Front of India (PLFI). David is a sub zonal commander of PLFI and the others are area commanders. They face criminal charges like murder and extortion.
Around 20 prisoners were brought to the court premises for hearings in different cases and the seven managed to flee taking advantage of the heavy rainfall in the district.
According to a police official, the cops responsible for the security were trying to find shelter to avoid getting drenched.
Police have launched a hunt for the escaped prisoners.
