In the first seizure, police of the border district of Gurdaspur, around 250 km from here, seized five kg of heroin and arrested two smugglers.

“We have recovered five-kg heroin that is worth Rs.25 crore in the international market. We laid a trap after a tip-off and arrested Tasbeer Singh whereas his accomplice Balbir Singh managed to flee,” said a police official.

However, Balbir met with an accident while fleeing and he was admitted in a hospital.

“Both Tasbeer and Balbir are notorious criminals and they were wanted by police in many cases. With the arrest of Tasbeer, we are hopeful of solving various cases of smuggling through the international borders in Punjab,” added the official.

Tasbeer is from a village in Gurdaspur district whereas Balbir is a resident of a village in Amritsar district, around 250 km from here.

In the second incident, police arrested a man and seized 2.8 kg of heroin from him in Jalandhar, nearly 150 km from here.

“We are investigating in the matter. The arrested man, Balwant Singh, was just a delivery agent between two drug peddlers. The price of the seized contraband is around Rs.10 crore in the international market,” said a police official.
