Shimla: The hills of Himachal Pradesh may experience heavy rainfall in the next two days, a weather official said Saturday.
Rivers and their tributaries are already in spate and the government has declared a high alert in Kullu, Mandi, Kinnaur, Bilaspur and Shimla districts.
“There are chances of heavy to very heavy rainfall at some places in the state till Monday,” local meteorological office director Manmohan Singh told IANS.
Most of the prominent tourist towns like Shimla, Narkanda, Kufri, Kalpa, Kasauli, Mandi, Chamba, Dharamsala, Palampur and Manali are likely to have good spells of rain in the next two days, he said.
Meanwhile, the government said high alert would continue in the state as recent rainfall in Kinnaur and Shimla districts has abnormally increased the water level in the Satluj and Beas rivers and their tributaries.
“The people settled along the Satluj and the Beas rivers have been warned to move to safer places,” a government spokesperson said.
He said the discharge in the Satluj – that increased to 2,300 cubic metres per second Friday against the normal flow of 1,850 cubic metres – was high.
Similarly, the Beas’ water level has increased to the extent that at some places, the river is touching the national highway 21 (Chandigarh-Manali).
The state experienced light to moderate rainfall Saturday.
According to the Met office here, Shimla got 0.6 mm of rain, Dharamsala 16.6 mm and Sundernagar 15.4 mm.
