Kozhikode: Kerala entered the holy month of Ramadan today. The Tharaveeh prayers began yesterday night in the masjids.
The qazis of Kozhikode Panakkad Nasar Abdul Hayy Shihab Thangal, KV Imbichammad Haji and Muhammed Koya Thangal, Samastha general secretary Cherussery Sainudheen Musliyar and Panakkad Hyderali Shihab Thangal announced that Ramadan 1 would fall on Thursday as the crescent was sighted at the Kozhikode beach. The qazis of Kozhikode, Wayanad, Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur and Kasargode districts also announced Ramadan 1 to be on Thursday.
The Kerala Hilal Committee had announced earlier itself that today would be the beginning of Ramadan as the crescent was not sighted on Tuesday.
However, some believers had begun to take fast yesterday itself as per the astrological calculation. They say that sighting the crescent is not necessary as it is difficult to see the crescent with naked eyes especially in rainy season.
