Trinamool sees murder conspiracy in Mamata’s accident

New Delhi : Alleging that “somebody” was trying to kill party chief Mamata Banerjee, Trinamool Congress MPs Thursday demanded a probe into Monday’s incident of a truck hitting a car in Banerjee’s cavalcade near Kolkata after the Lalgarh rally.

“There have been many attempts to kill her. Somebody is trying to kill her. She can be eliminated bodily from politics,” Trinamool MP Sudip Bandopadhyay alleged in the Lok Sabha.

“Banerjee has Z-plus security. How is it that a truck entered into her convoy when she was returning from Lalgarh and hit a car? Her car was also hit,” Bandopadhyay said.

“An investigation should be launched to know about the security breach,” he said, as his other party colleagues joined in.

Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) MP Basudeb Acharia intervened and informed the house that the truck driver has been arrested and a police enquiry ordered by West Bengal’s Left Front government.

“Why are they misleading the house? Why are they being allowed to mislead the house? They are raising the issue unnecessarily,” Acharia said.

This angered the Trinamool members and they shouted him down, repeatedly shouting: “They (CPI-M) are the people who try to kill us.”

This led to a minor altercation between the Trinamool and Left MPs.

At this point, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Lalu Prasad made an intervention and tried to cool down tempers. “The house,” he said, “sends its good wishes to Banerjee and wishes that she should return to the house soon.”

“As soon as she returns here, peace will return to the house,” he said.

Banerjee, also railway minister, Tuesday complained of chest and neck pain and breathlessness after a car in her convoy was hit by a lorry. She has been advised bed rest for some days.

Banerjee has been staying away from parliament since Monday and has drawn flak from a united opposition over her Maoist-backed rally at Lalgarh and her comments about the killing of rebel leader Cherukuri Rajkumar, alias Azad.
