Saffron groups behind many terror blasts: Chidambaram

New Delhi: More than one and half years in office, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram now admits Hindutva terror groups are behind several blasts in the country. In his inaugural speech at three-day DGPs/IGPs Conference here this morning, Chidambaram said that saffron terror was behind many bomb blasts.

Initially, some Muslim groups were blamed for each terror blast, big or small, in the country and consequently several hundred youths of the community were put behind bars.

“There is the recently uncovered phenomenon of saffron terrorism that has been implicated in many bomb blasts of the past,” the minister has been quoted as saying at the police chiefs conference that will be addressed by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on August 26, 2010.

In the last six months, several people attached to Sangh Parivar have been arrested in various terror cases including Ajmer and Mecca Masjid blasts.

Speaking on internal security, the minister also raised the issue of cross-border infiltration. He said there has been no let-up in attempts by militants to infiltrate into India.

He termed the recent situation in Jammu and Kashmir as vicious cirle. “Jammu and Kashmir is caught in vicious circle of stone pelting, teargassing, firing and again stone pelting. Centre is concerned that this vicious circle has not stopped,” Chidambaram said.

The three-day DGPs/IGPs Conference is being organized by the Intelligence Bureau. According to official communication, the objectives of the Conference are to provide an interactive platform for senior police professionals and security administrators in the country to freely discuss and debate diverse national security-related issues as also the various operational, infrastructural and welfare-related problems faced by the police in India. Its deliberations include formulation and sharing of professional practices and processes in tackling challenges relating to crime control and law and order management besides internal security threats such as terrorism, insurgency, left wing extremism, espionage and organized crime.
