Nepal’s Climate Change Council meeting endorses document on national policy

Kathmandu : The sixth meeting of the Climate Change Council under Nepali Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal endorsed a document on Climate Change National Policy 2067 (2010) here Tuesday.

Giving directives to the council on the occasion, Prime Minister Nepal stressed that the draft should include issues concerning the resettlement of the people living in Kalapathar, Chure region and flood and landslide-prone areas, and checking deforestation.

He also directed the Home Minister to take special initiatives to stop deforestation. Prime Minister Nepal directed the concerned authorities to take punitive measures against anyone found involved in deforestation.

Nepal has built confidence following the Copenhagen and Cancun conferences, he said, adding that Nepal should make further strides in achievement until the conference to be held in South Africa.

He also pointed out the need to encourage university students to work on the climate change issues, as it was linked with the existence of the human beings.

The draft of the Climate Change Policy 2067 has aimed at promoting development of clean energy and making economic evaluation of the impacts and possible advantage and disadvantage of the climate change.
