Islamabad : Pakistan will continue to maintain the minimum credible deterrence necessary for safeguarding the country and will take necessary steps for strengthening the country’s defence capability, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said Tuesday.
“Pakistan believes in peaceful co-existence. Nevertheless it is the policy of the government to maintain the minimum credible deterrence which is imperative for safeguarding the frontiers of the country,” he said while speaking to General Tariq Majid, the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff committee, during their meeting here.
Speaking separately to Pakistan Air Force chief Air Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman, Gilani said: “The government is mindful of the professional requirements of the armed forces and is taking all necessary steps for fulfilling their needs and strengthening their
defence capability.
The prime minister said that the Pakistan Air Force “is an effective force fully capable of meeting any challenge and its combat potential and manoeuvrability to defend the national and security interests of the country would be further enhanced”, Online news agency reported.
