Telangana JAC to wait for panel’s terms of reference

By IANS,

Hyderabad : Even as the government Wednesday announced a five-member panel headed by retired Supreme Court judge B.N. Srikrishna to deliberate on a mechanism for a separate Telangana state, the All-party Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the region said it would plan its next move only after the centre announces the terms of reference.

“We will meet once the centre announced terms of reference and other details and then react,” JAC convenor M. Kodandaram.

“The terms of reference are more important than the persons included in the committee,” Kodandaram said.

The terms of reference are being drafted and will be finalised in consultation with the chairman and announced shortly, a statement from the home ministry said.

The other members of the committee are vice chancellor of the National Law University Ranbir Singh, senior research fellow of the International Food Policy Research Institute Abusaleh Shariff, former home secretary Vinod Duggal and Ravinder Kaur, professor, department of humanities and social sciences, IIT Delhi.

The panel will consult all sections of people, political parties and groups in Andhra Pradesh.

The JAC leader reiterated that the agitation will continue until the centre abides by the Dec 9 announcement and initiates the mechanism for carving out Telangana state within a time-bound programme.

JAC had already set Feb 7 as the deadline for all the legislators to quit if the centre failed to constitute the committee within a time-bound programme.
