Kannur: The Women Empowerment Cell of Kerala Government is aiming to give engineering education for selected candidates. The girls who have passed science stream in +2 examinations will be given admission to three months engineering course of Indira Gandhi National Open University.
“The girls are taught engineering to give technical help to the cell which will give those girls jobs in field of women empowerment and enlarge the reach of the cell to every section of the society,” said the director of the cell.
Set up in 2006, the Women Empowerment Cell was not accepted by the public in the beginning. But later on people got attracted to the services of the Cell. As part of its programs, poor illiterate women are given work at soap factories, bag manufacturing companies and other places. They are given suitable wages for their work, which help them earn a suitable living.
Now it is the new innovative step of the cell. At first the cell would teach one girl from each area of a town, and they will be given permanent work at the block. After the success of the first step, a girl from each house would be given the opportunity to learn. At Thrissur, the first batch of students will set out for the work.
“Last year, the cell used 305 crore rupees out of the 1000 allotted by the Government. And the rest is saved for the purpose.”
Only 4 lakh women were expected to get work but the number has increased to about 8 lakh. The cell also aims at making use of the natural resources of the earth in providing work to the women folk of the state.
