Chandigarh: Four people were arrested for allegedly attacking a police van carrying prisoners from court to jail, police said Wednesday.
According to police, over 100 people forcibly stopped a police van and pelted stones at it. There were five prisoners in the van on their way back to jail from court.
“We have rounded up four accused. We are still investigating the reason behind this sudden attack. Right now I cannot comment anything on the issue why they attacked the van,” said a police official.
However, members of the mob, who attacked the police, had a different story to tell.
“I was going on my scooter when the police van, which had illegally crossed the red light, hit me from rear. When I objected to it, the cops sitting in the vehicle came out and beat me mercilessly. They also threw my turban away,” said Gurdeep Singh, who has been arrested.
“I knew that they were going to the court and I decided to teach them a lesson while returning. Therefore, I called my friends, relatives and other supporters and we stopped the police van. We had not pelted stones at anybody; rather police again beat us badly.”
