Patna : Ruling Janata Dal-United candidate Anil Sahni was declared elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Bihar, after the deadline for the withdrawal of nominations for the bypoll ended Friday, official sources said.
As no other candidate entered the race, Sahni was declared elected uncontested to the upper house of parliament.
Last month, the Election Commission decided to hold the by-election to a Rajya Sabha seat from Bihar Jan 8 to fill the vacancy caused by the death of sitting member Mahendra Sahni. The term of Sahni, a senior JD-U member who died Nov 6, was to end April 2, 2012.
JD-U fielded Anil Sahni, son of Mahendra Sahni, for the bypoll in spite of its declared principle to not nominate close relatives of party leaders for elections in the state.
