Kolkata: If everybody works together, football can take the place of cricket in India in 20 years, German soccer legend Lothar Matthaus said here Friday.
“I know Indians love cricket. But if everybody works together, then after 10-20 years football can have the same status as cricket in India,” Matthaus said after unveiling the Coca-Cola FIFA World Cup trophy.
The German World Cup winning captain said it was most important to enjoy the game. “You just need to work together.”
“Start at a young age. Not everybody can be a Maradona or Ronaldo. But you must enjoy the game. If things go right, you get corporate support, then you can come up.”
India are now 134th in the FIFA ranking.
