Chennai: Workers in a Nokia India plant near here are likely to resume work Thursday, thus ending a two-day strike over the transfer of an employee, a union leader said Wednesday.

The stalemate was broken after the labour commissioner’s office here asked the striking workers to get back to work and also directed the management to sort out the row by Jan 25.

The strike began Tuesday.

The proximate cause of strike was the transfer of an employee from one department to another without his knowledge and suspension of 39 workers Tuesday and Wednesday.

“The transfer and the miscommunication resulted in some misunderstanding and the strike,” Labour Progressive Front (LPF) general secretary M. Shanmugam told IANS.

“The issue has been sorted out after discussions with the deputy labour commissioner and production will resume immediately,” Shanmugam added.

The Nokia India Employees Progressive Union is an affiliate of the LPF, the labour wing of the ruling DMK.
