at least two bombers had sneaked into this largest city of Assam to strike ahead of Republic Day.

The militant also led to the recovery of a powerful improvised explosive device (IED) in a rented house.

A senior police official told reporters: “The arrested ULFA militant divulged crucial information about at least two bombers specially assigned for Guwahati to carry out attacks ahead of Jan 26.”

The militant, arrested earlier this week in the city, led a team of commandos to a house in Guwahati’s Lalmati area early Saturday.

“We raided the safe house of the outfit and recovered a powerful IED,” the official said.

The ULFA and four other militant groups in the northeast have called for a general strike and boycott of the Republic Day in the region.

“We have stepped up operations in the city and also across Assam to foil any rebel plans for attacks in the run up to the Republic Day,” the official said.

Security forces in the northeast have been alerted with militant groups calling for boycott of the Republic Day.
