Vienna, July 1, IRNA – Olli Heinonen, Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Safeguards of the UN nuclear watchdog has resigned, IAEA’s spokesperson Gill Tudor announced Thursday.
Releasing a statement, the spokeperson said that International Atomic Energy Director General Yukiya Amano has accepted Heinonen’s resignation “to respect his intention.”
“We confirm that Mr Heinonen informed the DG of his resignation to take effect at the end of August for personal reasons,” Tudor said adding, “The DG has decided to respect Hienonen’s intention with high appreciation for his long contribution to the Agency.”
“Nothing has yet been decided” for Heinonen’s successor, Tudor said stressing that his post “should be filled without delay.”
