Sensex closes 173 points higher, global cues help

Mumbai : A benchmark index for Indian equities Tuesday closed 173 points higher, buoyed by a recovery in global bourses. Metals, consumer durables, IT and banking stocks gained.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 17,402.68 points, closed at 17,614.48 points, 173.04 points or 0.99 percent up from its previous close at 17,441.44 points.

At the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the broader 50-share S&P CNX Nifty ended at 5,289.05 points, up 1.02 percent from its previous close at 5,235.9 points.

Broader markets indices were also in the positive, with the BSE midcap index ending 0.75 percent higher and the BSE smallcap index up 0.6 percent.

The market breadth was positive, with 1,628 scrips advancing, compared to 1,249 stocks declining, and 127 remaining unchanged.

Among the gainers on the Sensex were M&M, up 2.67 percent at Rs.626; TCS, up 2.45 percent at Rs.757.75; HDFC Bank, up 2.41 percent at Rs.1,959.10; and Jindal Steel, up 2.16 percent at Rs.629.15.

Prominent losers included Reliance Communications, down 1.8 percent at Rs.182.25; Hindalco, down 1.19 percent at Rs.124.90; ACC, down 0.96 percent at Rs.855.05; and BHEL, down 0.47 percent at Rs.2,012.05.

Asian markets posted modest gains amidst fears of a slowdown in China and feeble growth in the U.S.

The Japanese Nikkei closed 0.77 percent up at 9,338.04 points, while the South Korean Kospi ended 0.57 percent higher at 1,684.94 points.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng closed at 20,084.12 points, up 1.22 percent, while the Chinese Shanghai Composite index rose 1.92 percent at 2,409.42 points, helped by sharp gains in the recently battered banking stocks.

European markets were in the green with lower valuations attracting some buys in commodity stocks and investors breathing a sigh of relief after crisis-hit oil major BP said it was not going to offer a strategic stake in the company to raise money.

In Britain, the benchmark index FTSE 100 was ruling 2.12 percent up at 4,925.93 points, while the French CAC 40 was trading 2.95 percent higher at 3,430.69 points.

The German DAX was up 2.05 percent at 5,935.16 points.
