Leaders should not cross line of decency: Pranab

Kolkata: Taking a dig at Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Nitin Gadkari’s reference to parliament attack convict Afzal Guru as the “son-in-law” of the Congress, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee Sunday said political leaders should not cross the line of decency while making statements.

“While making statements political leaders should keep in mind that the line of decency is not crossed,” Mukherjee said, without naming Gadkari.

A war of words is currently on between Congress and BJP over Gadkari’s reference to parliament attack convict Afzal Guru as the “son-in-law” of Congress.

Gadkari, while addressing a rally in Dehradun July 8 had attacked the Congress over the delay in executing the death sentence of Afzal Guru and had asked whether Guru was the “son-in-law” of the Congress.

Afzal Guru was sentenced to death for his role in the Dec 13, 2001, attack on parliament. He has filed a mercy petition with the president.
