Chandigarh : The authorities in Haryana’s Kaithal district Sunday expressed apprehension of flooding due to the alarmingly high water levels of the Ghaggar river and other canals passing through the area.
“Water in the Ghaggar river is flowing four feet above the danger mark at sub-divison Guhla in Kaithal district. Besides, 3,000 cusecs water is flowing in Hansi-Butana link canal passing through the district,” said Kaithal deputy commissioner Amneet P. Kumar, here Sunday.
Haryana’s Kaithal, Ambala and Kurukshetra districts were adversely affected in this week’s flooding that have so far claimed 11 lives in the state.
Talking about the loss incurred due to floods in Kaithal, Kumar said, “Over 4 lakh people have been affected due to floods. Nearly 1 lakh hectares of agricultural land has been inundated with water and standing crops worth Rs.3 crore have been damaged.”
“Ninety-six residential houses have been damaged and public property has suffered a loss of Rs.4.60 crore. The total loss is estimated at Rs. 8.14 crore,” she pointed out.
According to officials, a 90-member team of National Disaster Management Institute, Noida and a team of 65 army personnel are undertaking relief work in Kaithal.
“We are ready to tackle any kind of emergency. We have a stand-by of 15,000 water pouches, 15,000 sand bags, 60 diesel pumps and 20 tractor trolleys to plug the breach caused by flood water in any canal or drain,” Kumar said.
