New Delhi: Jamiat Ulema-I-Hind has welcomed the recommendation of National Advisory Council headed by Congress president Sonia Gandhi for amendments in the Communal Violence Bill (CVB). Jamiat expressed happiness over the endorsement of their views and apprehensions about the bill. Jamiat leaders had met Mrs Gandhi on the issue and submitted a memorandum in May 2010.
The Council also advised the government to constitute a national authority to check communal and sectarian violence in the country.
The Communal Violence (Prevention, Control and Rehabilitation of Victims) Bill which was introduced in the Rajya Sabha in 2005 and is waiting to be passed in the Lok Sabha has many objectionable provisions especially it gives unnecessary power to the police. Many NGOs including Jamiat registered their objection over the bill in its present form and urged government to redraft the bill.
A Jamiat delegation met Mrs. Sonia Gandhi on 22nd May, 2010 and informed her about their concerns regarding the bill. They warned that in case government does not take any step to amend the bill JUH would start Jail Bharo Tahreek. Mrs. Gandhi had assured the delegation that the council will try to fulfill their demands.
JUH also wrote to Mrs. Gandhi on 15th June, 2010 and urged her to play her role to redraft CVB because in the present form it is useless and has nothing to do with the control of violence rather it will open the door of problems for the minority communities.
In a statement on Thursday JUH national president Qari Syed Mohammad Usman appreciated the NAC recommendation and urged the government not to put the bill in the garbage instead to get it passed with amendment as soon as possible.
