Farooq mulls autonomy in JK, Govt to consider release of political detenues

Srinagar: President of ruling National Conference and Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Dr. Farooq Abdullah Thursday said Restoration of ‘Autonomy’ is the only way out to bring normalcy and peace in the state and sub-continent and if there is any other solution better than autonomy which is acceptable to people of Jammu and Kashmir the party will welcome that,.

According to Agence India Press reporter, NC President in a jam packed news conference at his Gupkar Residence said that the, Working Committee, also asked the government to consider the release of all political detenus. The meeting of the Working Committee came in the backdrop of separatist-sponsored violence and killing of 18 youths in parts of the Kashmir Valley in the last one month.

Autonomy is the only way to bring normalcy and permanent peace to the state and the sub-continent is to restore autonomy in its pristine form as guaranteed in the Indian Constitution”, Abdullah said. However, he said NC has reiterated its stand that “if a better solution than autonomy is forthcoming, the party will welcome it”.

Jammu and Kashmir’s ruling National Conference today asked the Congress-NC coalition government to firmly deal with destablizing forces and to consider release of all political detenues in order to build an atmosphere conducive to peace and reconciliation. “It was resolved that the government should deal with the forces of destablisation firmly and simultaneously build the confidence of the majority of law-abiding citizens who do not want their day-to-day lives to be disrupted by these forces”, NC President Farooq Abdullah told reporters after a seven-hour meeting of Central Working Committee of the party here.

Briefing media-persons after the meeting, Abdullah said Kashmir is primarily a political problem and needs to be resolved through peaceful political means. To a question about the Centre”s offer of talks to separatists, Abdullah, who is a Union Minister, said “the PM has kept his doors open.”
