Hashmi was one of the four-member Indian team that participated in the Olympiad held at Changwon. The Indian team won one gold (Sahal Kaushik) and three silver medals (Hashmi, Apurva Singh Yadav and Preet Hathi). The team was selected from around 10, 000 participants via a three-tier process in the national level. In the first stage, over 8000 students wrote a nation-wide exam in Biology. Students for the Olympiad were selected after the second and third stages which consisted of a series of difficult selection tests both theoretical and practical, conducted at the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education.

Hashmi’s parents – S Khalid Hashmi and Asima Hashmi – are proud of their son who has bagged several awards in various academic competitions. Hashmi was one of the top ten in the Engineering, Agriculture and Medicine Common Entrance Test 2010 in the medicine stream. However, he is reportedly waiting to get admissions in his hometown in the Osmania University.

More than 240 pre-university students from around 60 countries competed with each other in theory and practical competitions in the Olympiad. The International Biology Olympiad is conducted annually in different member countries of the IBO. The 19th Olympiad was held in Mumbai in 2008.
