Lucio passes Pele in number of World Cup games for Brazil

Durban : Centre-back Lucio surpassed Pele as the player with the most number of World Cup matches for Brazil when he captained the South Americans against Portugal in Durban Friday.

It was Lucio’s 15th game with the five-times World Cup winners.

Lucio said overtaking Pele would make him “happy,” although his goal is South Africa was “to win the title.”

Former right-back Cafu has played the most World Cup games for Brazil, turning out out 20 times over four editions of the tournament from 1994-2006. He won the title twice, in 1994 and 2002.

Striker Ronaldo is one game behind on 19, followed by Carlos Dunga, the current coach, who played 18 times for the “selecao” from 1990-98.
