Chandigarh: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Wednesday cautioned the public against fraudulent e-mails on winning millions of rupees in lotteries.
“Recently, we have come to know that residents of this part of the country are getting mails through Internet about the winning lotteries worth millions of rupees. We appeal to the people to remain very cautious and ignore such mails,” said Jasbir Singh, the RBI’s regional director.
“The senders of these mails ask for details regarding bank account number, passwords and other general information. As soon as anyone provides these details, they fraudulently withdraw the money from that account,” Singh told reporters.
Talking about the number of complaints that RBI has received, Singh said, “We have not got any direct complaint regarding this as we are not the investigation agency. But it is our duty to spread awareness among the masses.”
In a recent case, a retired principal of Punjab Engineering College (PEC) was duped of Rs.2,341,000 by some unidentified people.
“There were some cases where the accused were even using RBI letterheads but we want to make it clear that we are not running any such scheme or offer,” said Singh.
