New Delhi: The National President of Students Islamic Organization of India Suhail KK and National Secretary Shahnawaz Ali Raihan yesterday met Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal at his Ministry office in Shastri Bhawan to discuss issues related to education, particularly Foreign University Bill and minority character of Jamia Millia Islamia.
SIO President appreciated the steps taken by the Govt. in education sector especially the hike in budgetary allocation taking it to Rs.5000 crore in literacy programs and the bold step to pass the historic Right to Education Act.
The delegation focused on issues like Foreign University Bill, restoration of democratic environment in University campuses, 6% GDP for education, amendment of Jamia Millia Islamia Act to make it a minority institute and impartial inquiry.
SIO President shared his apprehension regarding Foreign University Bill which may lead to strengthening of commercialization of education and social inequality and also the focus on market oriented courses. A standard of campus etiquettes also need to be fixed so that cultural invasion and its impacts are minimized, the delegation said. The promotion of new campus environment may also push the concept of apolitical campus. Kapil Sibal assured SIO leaders that a regulatory mechanism would be made for that.
SIO President demanded amendment of Jamia Millia Islamia Act considering the fact that Jamia Millia Islamia was set up for improving educational standards of Muslims and declare Jamia as a minority institute. The SIO leaders also demanded probe into all recent blasts and encounters.
