New Delhi : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Thursday slammed an unapologetic Mulayam Singh Yadav for his controversial remarks about the women’s reservation bill, saying the Samajwadi Party chief was “insensitive”.
“(Mulayam Singh) Yadav has been unapologetic about his recent sexist remarks. Nonetheless, nothing better was expected of him,” BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy said after the SP leader refused to apologise for his remarks against women who would get elected as law makers under a proposed quota.
“I don’t like to say this, but they (those elected on women’s quota) would be the women, youth would whistle at,” the Samajwadi Party chief said in a rally Tuesday. The SP and other regional north Indian parties are opposing the women’s reservation bill, saying it was anti-Dalit and anti-minority.
Rudy said Mulayam Singh was free to voice his political opinion but maintained that the politician should not have used such language.
“He has no business to comment on grace and dignity of women at large. The repeated unapologetic assertion is irresponsible, insensitive and callous. BJP outrightly condemns it,” Rudy added.
The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister has come under a sharp attack from political parties and women’s rights groups who said his remarks at a Lucknow rally were sexist.
