Hyderabad : All legislators of the main opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP), barring its chief N. Chandrababu Naidu, were suspended from the Andhra Pradesh assembly for one-day for stalling the house Friday.
Speaker Kirankumar Reddy announced suspension of 62 TDP present in the house for one day as they stalled the proceedings demanding continuation of debate on corruption charges against government officials.
As soon as the house met for the evening sitting, the TDP embers demanded that the debate on corruption, which remained inconclusive in the morning, be continued. However, the speaker turned down their demand and tried to proceed with the listed agenda.
As the opposition legislators did not heed to his request for esuming their seats, the speaker adjourned the house for 15 minutes. When the house re-assembled, the TDP members stuck to their demand.
When repeated appeals by the speaker to allow smooth conduct of the house fell on deaf ears, he asked Minister for Legislative Affairs Dharmana Prasada Rao to move a resolution for suspending the TDP members.
The same was passed by a voice vote.
This is the first time in the current budget session that the speaker suspended TDP legislators.
Later talking to reporters, Naidu alleged that the government was trying to gag the opposition.
