Chandigarh : A 27-year-old woman, depressed after her engagement to a businessman was cancelled, committed suicide here at her house Monday, police said.
“Shruti committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan. Her engagement was scheduled to a Karnal-based businessman but we have got information that the boy’s family terminated it,” said a police official, who was present in the Shruti’s Sector 7 house.
He said a case has been registered and the body sent for postmortem examination.
“So far we have not found any suicide note from the spot but our investigation and search operation is still on,” he said.
Shruti, who had studied fashion designing in the US, was the daughter of an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Sushil Kumar, who had died a few years back. Her mother, Swati, is a Haryana government employee. She also had two younger sisters.
Shruti’s relatives were tight-lipped over this incident. Many senior officials of Haryana government, including several bureaucrats, also visited the house.
